Immunity Project – are we moving towards a new era of crowdfunded medical research?

A strange thing just happened. A group of Harvard, MIT and Stanford university ‘scientists and entrepreneurs’ have emerged from their shadowy labs somewhere deep in the heart of the Californian jungle, to register a project to fight HIV and AIDS. What’s interesting is the fact that the Immunity Project, as it’s called, has not only signed on with the prestigious YCombinator startup incubator scheme, but it’s also gone straight to the people to ask for funding for a crucial part…

Baboom – Kim Dotcom returns with an awesome demo of his new music service

I’m writing this while listening to the latest album from Kim Dotcom which is running on a demo of his upcoming new music service, Baboom. Dotcom is rapidly moving from cool to awesome on the Richter scale of innovative dogged persistence. And it must be driving the fuddy-duddy music industry nuts.

Not another messaging app, we hear you cry. But wait, this could actually be the best thing since sliced bread, especially as it’s fully open source and the developers have committed to never charging a penny or displaying nasty adverts. Ah…see…now you’re listening…

Daily Free Books – free Kindle ebooks delivered to your email inbox every day [Freeware]

Regular readers will know that we’re lovers of the free eBook service from Amazon and other booksellers, and although Amazon ticked us off recently by removing the ability to log RSS feeds of new books in particular genres, it seems there’s now an alternative option which is almost as useful.

The O.R.B Ring Or When Fashion Meets High Tech Gadgetry

It’s no longer news we’re heading to a world where wearable technology will replace classic gadgets (take for example the Nissan Nismo Smartwatch or theĀ  Wime Smart Phone Wristwatch we featured earlier – both designed to bring added value to users by offering extra features without the hassle of crowding your pockets with another gadget).

Timely – absolutely gorgeous alarm clock for Android, now free of charge [Freeware]

Last week Google swooped in and bought yet another small company using it’s extremely large duffel bag of loose change and lunch vouchers. But this time, instead of immediately shutting down the product and re-deploying the engineers towards the rear of the Googleplex building, Google has done the unthinkable. It’s turned a great product into a free one.

Internet Archives Console Games – free retro games in your browser offer too much fun

It’s totally ridiculous how far computer games have come in a mere 30 years, but that’s not to say that snazzy graphics and out of this world audio is all you need for a great video game. Back in the 80s there were some games which were just as addictive as today’s offerings, even if they lacked the polish we expect nowadays.

One of the singularly most annoying things about Google is when you try and do a search while you’re abroad for work or on vacation and Google insists on delivering the local language page of results for the country you are visiting. [image – shutterstock]

Skully P1 – The HUD Interactive Motorcycle Helmet

Motorcycle helmets are clearly designed to save lives, a nd they do it pretty well – many riders can affirm they’re still on the road because of them. However, the tech has not really progressed much over the past years, which means that your generic helmet generally won’t cope with Bluetooth, head up displays and the like.Ā  The Reevu MSX1 was on step further along, since it gave users easy access to an internal rear-view mirror, but since then not…

Trees For Cars – homeless man taught to code releases first smartphone app after just 4 months

It’s one of those good Samaritan stories that’s just tailor made for the Christmas season. Young programmer walking to work one day in New York sees homeless man sleeping on a bench and comes up with an ingenious, some would say diabolical, plan. Offer the man a choice of $100 cash or a cheap laptop and some programming lessons for an hour each day.
