Search Fox.

SearchFox. A free beta bookmark/favourites management toolbar. With sharing and swish search and there’s also an RSS feed in there somewhere, although I don’t think it’s integrated. I’m a Powermarks fan, so not sure if this adds any value to my life (apart from the free bit of course).  Our BETA product lets you tag web favorites with your own words so you can get back to them. It also lets you find what people you trust find useful, valuable, and…

FasterFox. Speed up your Firefox browser by tweaking settings. Installs into Firefox Options if you can’t find it. I didn’t actually notice any difference at all under the optimized setting, but got a 25% uplift on the Turbo-Charged.

The Virtual Parrot Screensaver. An animated 3D parrot screensaver that remembers what it hears and repeats it back to you at random intervals. Hoot!  ‘Vina’ can remembers whatever it hears and will say out later with funny voice. You can teach Vina to talk with the voices you want, to remember and say out whatever you want. You also can teach Vina what to remember and what not. You can change background where you want Vina to be at. And…

Inkscape graphics.

Inkscape. A free Open Source graphics program a la CorelDraw or Freehand. Looks good. Supports  EPS, JPEG, PNG, and TIFF. Oooh, acronym city!  Inkscape is an open source drawing application similar to Adobe Illustrator, Corel Draw, Freehand, or Xara X. What sets Inkscape apart is its use of Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG), an open XML-based [W3C] standard, as the native format…While Inkscape does not have all the features of the market leading proprietary software, the latest versions provide for a…

The terabyte mailbox.

So both and offer free 1 terabyte email services, eh? Hmm…clever marketing, genuine altruism or common sense ahead of its time? Your call.  We have been asked why we would do such a thing. The answer is simple to help people store large amounts of information in a safe and secure environment. We live in a world where natural and un-natural events take place, that can destroy homes or offices, when that happens many people loose all of their…

Gooey mail?

Goowy (re – for rich experience) gets the Ferret award for this month’s most inventive…ahem…name. Apparently it’s an online email (100MB), calendaring and contact manager service. For free. Mmm…not sure that the world needs yet another one of these shared life things. Or if it does, it really should be as uber cool as Ning, methinks. And yes, I hate myself for loving the Ning concept, because it’s going to become just so darned trendy! Shame on you Marc Andreessen….

MP3 Radio.

MP3 Radio. Freeware MP3 software that talks to you. Works as an alarm clock. And stuff. Check it out and make sure to leave your PC on overnight, eh?  With MP3 Radio, you tell the DJ what songs to play. You tell him what public service announcements to read. The DJ will even keep you up-to-date on the latest news headlines and current weather conditions. MP3 Radio turns your PC into a very serious Alarm clock radio. It even has…

Mailwasher Free.

Mailwasher Free. The free version of the veteran anti-spam program Mailwasher is back. I have to say that I’m noticing a significant – repeat significant – reduction in spam reaching my inbox. In fact 10 days ago I uninstalled Spam Inspector from my machine because it had become superfluous. Hotmail and my four main ISP accounts together are now delivering a mere handful of spam messages each day. The flipside is that one of my main ISP accounts is now…

ShortKeys Lite.

ShortKeys Lite. Neat little text macro software, add in your chosen short key command (e.g. #a) and out pops your stored text, for instance your address. Very useful. The free version allows for 15 short keys to be set up. The $19.95 version is unlimited.  Automate tedious and repetitive typing. Reduce errors. Type a few characters and ShortKeys will replace them with up to 3000 keystrokes. You will be amazed how much time ShortKeys will save.

Deep Burner.

Deep Burner. Free and very useful CD burning software. I’m so fed up with progs like Nero which can’t even do a simple thing like burn a bootable DS Linux CD without pfaffing about for hours working out the interface. Try this instead.

Firepuddle. BitTorrent P2P downloading for Firefox. Very Alpha and only for Firefox 1.5 beta. Caveat!  This a HIGHLY EXPERIMENTAL release which may crash and no doubt contains a few bugs. The purpose of this release is to demonstrate the progress of this project. It should not be used for any important downloads! If you are unsure, please wait till the beta releases.

Google Desktop Beta.

Google Desktop Beta. Just installed this. Hate to sound like Google fan-boy, but it’s good. Integration – 9/10 (disappears into the desktop interface nicely) Usefulness – 7/10 (still trying to work out if it’s *that* useful) Speed – 7/10 (indexing kind of sluggish, no impact on day to day working though) Compatibility – 6/1 (breaks some stuff – see below – but seems OK) Community – 8/10 (plug-ins good) Comments: Breaks TruImage, needs more upfront explanation of the various desktop panel options, but the integrated desktop and web…
