Noisy Typer gives an old-fashioned feel to a new-fangled machine

There’s a certain sort of charm that comes with using a typewriter. It’s not really that it makes typing easier, as it’s actually quite a bit more difficult to get everything right on the first try. However, the tap-tap-tapping and the “ding” hitting the end of a line were quite satisfying to hear.

BatteryInfoView tells you more about your laptop battery than you probably want to know [Freeware]

Why can’t they sort out our batteries? It’s been decades now, and we’re still suffering from phones with half a day working life, MP3 players which run out mid-song and laptops which explode can’t even play a whole movie on battery. It’s not good enough. Even worse, no-one seems to make accurate battery gauges to indicate how long we’ve got to go before dark time, which makes it all very hit or miss.

Dictionary .NET is a mutli talented language tool [Freeware]

The world is becoming a smaller place. Not only can we traverse the planet in mere hours nowadays, but at the click of a button we can be chatting to someone literally the other side of the globe. It’s incredible how much we take it for granted, so it’s nice to see that some developers are still creating tools to make it easier for us to communicate with each other.

DeepSound lets you hide your private files inside innocent looking audio files [Freeware]

You can’t be too careful nowadays, as the baddies are out to get us. They’re sniffing our pipes, poking our profiles and shuffling through our online underwear, trying to get into our secrets and private stuff. It’s a war peeps, and the price of the tussle is eternal vigilance. Or something.

Anti Tracks Free keeps your PC super clean and shiny [Freeware]

Everything we do on our computer gets logged. Every file we open, image we edit, video we watch, and no matter how diligent we are these actions can be tracked back by anyone with enough smarts and time. Of course there’s no good reason for becoming overly paranoid about this stuff, but if you live in an insecure, shared environment, you might want to think about keeping some sort of control over your PC to ensure your privacy stays…well private.

MyPublicWiFi lets you share your 3G or WiFi with multiple devices [Freeware]

Road warriors who travel all the time know the problem. Your hotel room offers free WiFi, but it’s only for a single computer or you have to pay extra. Or you have a 3G dongle delivering broadband to your laptop, but you need to access it from your phone or another device to get some task done. Basically there are times when you need the convenience of logging on to a WiFi network access point, quickly and easily.

Paperbak lets you back up your files onto paper…yes paper! [Freeware]

One of the big problems with the constant advances in technology is keeping up with the growing list of media formats. If you’re like us, you’ve got old CDs, DVDs, hard disks and maybe even the occasional floppy disk or Zip drive lying around, all containing some data on them from way back. And the problem is ten times as bad for companies.

EULAlyzer is a powerful weapon in the fight against unfair software fine print [Freeware]

Software agreements eh? Who hates ’em? Yeah us too. Who on earth wants to wade through 5 pages of densely worded text to discover what we’re signing up for when we install a program onto our computer? Not us. But the problem is, that’s how they trap us into agreeing to accept nasty stuff like advertising, tracking, data collection, clauses allowing the developers to collect our first born at midnight. That sort of thing. But ta-da, now we have a…

One Click Torrent simplifies BitTorrent downloads for Chrome [Freeware]

BitTorrent is a great tool for downloading large files, and with enough number people to piggy-back off (called seeding) it can slash download times to a fraction of the time it would usually take. But the problem for most people, especially newcomers to the technology, is it can be quite difficult to understand how to make it all work, especially since you typically need to install a BitTorrent client first.

Freemake Video Converter is a superb quick and dirty video editor [Freeware]

The other day I had a bit of an epiphany. I realized that not only had smartphones changed the way we produced and consumed video, but they’d also changed the type of thing we used video for. Back in the day we grabbed our camcorders and shot tons of footage of little Suzie on the swings, or Dad making goofy faces at the beach, and we laboriously stitched these together in long videos for CDs and DVDs to show at…

Battery Optimizer transforms your laptop battery life [Freeware]

If you use a portable product chances are that your number one gripe revolves around battery life. And if you’re a laptop computer user, you’ve almost definitely at some point or another suffered from too little battery time when it was needed. Until now there’s been very little you can do about this state of affairs, other than the obvious stuff like reducing your screen brightness. But a new freeware program now promises to make it easier to extend the…
