After several years of showing off prototypes of their technology, the folk at Antig have finally announced the launch of a handheld direct methanol powered fuel cell charger called the Antig A5 Blade. The product is designed to deliver up to 10 hours of power from a single cartridge of fuel and can charge up small devices such as mobile phones, PDAs and digital cameras. The company has also announced other products in their fuel cell range which offer more juice for things like e-vehicles, but there’s still no word on either pricing or in-store availability. There’s also the slightly tricky matter of the potential problems with methanol, which could be an issue if we all start using the stuff in quantity. Antig Technology is launching a new line of fuel cell products that promise to remove the one last wire that connects people to their homes or offices – the power cable. With a fuel cell, people never have to plug in again to charge their devices. By simply replacing empty fuel, devices can continue to run without ever having to wait for a recharge. The larger the fuel cartridge, the longer the runtime. Antig fuel cells are based on methanol, which is a hydrogen rich fuel that can be safely carried and used by consumers. Their A5 unit fits in the palm of a hand, while their larger A25 and A50 units are designed to be carried.
