Is our love affair with the iPod over? – Sony beats out Apple in massive customer survey

Sonyvsipodreevoo

According to a new survey by the UK’s biggest user review site, Reevoo, the Apple iPod is barely clinging to a place in the top 5 rated music players on the market. Surprising news indeed, especially when you see that the top product is Sony’s elderly NWE016 music player, which even beat Apple to the top spot in terms of design – 10/10 vs 9.2/10 for the iPod. Another Sony comes next, followed by Hitachi, and as we speak the Samsung Yepp and new iPod Nano 8GB are fighting it out for fifth and fourth position respectively. Apparently users aren’t too impressed with the iPod’s battery life. Strange eh? Oh and the survey size was over 4000 reviews of 293 music players taken from the largest online retailers in the country, so it’s probably quite representative.

Apple’s popular iPod range didn’t make the top three in a poll of 293 MP3 players, as rated by genuine purchasers on independent review website, Reevoo, who analysed over 4,000 MP3 player customer reviews. Unfortunately for Apple, this MP3 player race was dominated by Sony with the Sony NWE016BC just nudging the Sony NWZA816 into second place. Third was the Hitachi DMP20 2GB, followed by the New Green iPod Nano 8GB in fourth and the Black Samsung YP-P2JCB 8GB in fifth…Poor battery life is a constant disappointment in Apple products and the Nano was no exception. Reviewers were given eight categories in which to rate their MP3 players and it was no surprise that battery life was the most poorly rated category for the iPod.

  • Actually, you missed some important details and as a consequence your description is misleading. The top rated Sony’s only have a handful of reviewers (the top one has 4 and another has 3). The Hitachi has 6. The Samsung has 16 which is enough to make me think it is useful information. The Apple Nano has 29 reviews. Anyway, hardly a massive amount of data and not impartial.

I own a Zen and am not interested in defending or critiquing it related to other players. It works fine; has a few UI quirks. Other players could be better.

  • I only know one person who has anything but an iPod, and people who used to tell me how much better their Creative players were, now have iPods.

So as usual a survey displays the data it wants to portray.

  • And yet the iPod family continue to out sell all the other music players. Strange that.

  • MrMcMuffin – totally! :-) If they don’t like ’em, why keep buying them?
