Piwik – open source web analytics software

Piwik

Piwik is an open source web analytics package which gives website owners detailed information on their visitor stats and other useful stuff. It’s aiming to be an open alternative to the free Google Analytics software, and comes with some interesting differences, notably that all the data is stored on your own servers. You can also configure the functionality you want just by installing the right plugin, and the developers are clearly hoping that the community starts creating lots of lovely useful plugins asap. I also like the configurability of the interface, you can drag an’ drop widgets as you need to make the dashboard optimal for your needs. Nice. Isn’t open source wonderful?

piwik is different from the competition because: 1. the features are built inside plugins: you can add new features and remove the ones you don’t need. If you are a developer, you can easily build your own plugins! 2. you own your data. Piwik being installed on your server, the data is stored in your own database and you can get all the statistics using open APIs (publishing the data in many formats: xml, json, php, csv) 3. (NOW AVAILABLE!!!) the user interface is fully customizable, you can drag and drop the widgets you want to display, create the reports you want

  • I particularly like the effect when you choose to present one of the widget as a pie chart.
Try this: go here; hover the mouse over the + sign on the bottom of one of the widgets (say, “keywords”); click the last icon, “Piechart”.
