ReadManiac – superb free ebook reader for all mobile phones

Readmaniac

ReadManiac is an excellent open source Java ebook reader for mobile phones. The cool thing about it, apart from the free loveliness, is the fact that it comes with its own application customiser. You can select from a variety of different handsets and Java settings and it will create an ebook reader which will be optimised for your model of phone. One tip, make sure you increase the default memory size if you’re customising for a modern smartphone.

Having created your customised reader, it’s simply a matter of uploading it to your phone via cable, Bluetooth or steam shovel. The program comes with all the essential bits, like bookmarking, autoscroll and backlight control to conserve battery, and works perfectly to read .txt, zip, PDB, PRC and TCR formats. It comes with pretty sophisticated font control too, so you can install and use your favourite fonts and there’s even an integrated search engine for downloading free books directly from the Internet to your handset.

Kudos to Roman and the rest of the original Russian development team. And max points for releasing it to Open Source so that development can continue. An excellent product and one that deserves wider attention.

  • Seems similar to:

    Tequilacat Book Reader
    http://tequilacat.org/dev/br/index-en.html

    =)
    Both are made by russians!

  • Yeah K., it looks that way, except the Tequilacat product only produces embedded Java books with the reader attached. The Manic product also has a full standalone reader which can search for book files on your handset and open them at will. It’s a much more flexible product all round. Love those Russians though, eh? :-)

  • good to know about this one, I just knew the tequilacat

hey, please disable the auto translator or whatever you've activated for your page.

Not only it translates in a terrible spanish (in my case), but also beacuse some of us love to see the info in it's original language, whether it's nihongo, english, español or français…

you can instead put some flags for people who doesn't speak you language and that way they'll be able to translate it to their languages just if they want.

Many more file formats & languages will come soon !

This application can be usefull in public transportation, to listen documents while driving, while doing sports, for people having difficulties with fine characters on mobile phones, for eLearning, etc …
