SIMply A-GPS – new SIM card tech can transform every mobile phone into a GPS sat-nav

Simplyagps

The SIMply A-GPS SIM card from Sagem-Orga and BlueSky Positioning embeds A-GPS satellite navigation onto a standard 3G/GSM SIM card, thereby turning an ordinary vanilla mobile phone handset into a glorious GPS enabled satellite navigation system. What’s amazing is the fact that they have managed to squeeze the whole GPS receiver, antenna and application software onto a standard sized card, which means it will fit inside every mobile phone on the planet.

No software modifications are needed on old handsets, and from the looks of it, the whole thing is just plug and go. There’s 256K of memory on the SIM card for the software, and the system will work as both an emergency location device and for things like vehicle navigation and location based games. Test samples were released in November of last year, so with luck it should only be a matter of time before we start to see this technology appearing on the shelves in earnest.

The A-GPS SIM exploits a major technology breakthrough made by BlueSky Positioning, including a proprietary In-SIM antenna (patents pending). To make localization even more accurate and user friendly, this technology is using Assisted GPS data servers. The A-GPS SIM card complies with GSM and 3G standards and thus works with legacy GSM and 3G handsets without the need for modifications or additional software. No software or hardware changes are needed for legacy handsets.
