Windows Vista to Windows 7.0 – To upgrade or not to upgrade, that is the question…

Goodness knows how I loathe Windows Vista, but even so I’m just not sure I want to risk upgrading to Windows 7 right now. At least until the bugs surface and are squashed. Too dodgy, right?

This neat BBC article helps, but still leaves some questions open. I’ve now downloaded the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor to try and help my decision, but would you trust something that came from a company that thought Vista was a reasonable product? No, nor me. Sigh.

  • I've set up the RC (7100) to dual boot with XP on a 5 year old Pentium M 1.4Ghz laptop (1Gb RAM) and it runs like a top. I used the upgrade adviser as well, and it suggested I boost the RAM to 1Gb, which I did, but everything would be compatible and so far everything is running fine.

There are a couple of niggles. First the media player will not play video smoothly, it runs at maybe 10fps, yet it's seamless on XP even streaming over wifi. Second, every 5 minutes or so the computer just stops responding, maybe for 2-3 seconds. It's only when it's idle though. Oh and the built-in media centre barely functions, not enough processor I'd say, but everything else seems great.

I have reinstalled it a couple of times (for various reasons) and it's never taken longer than 20 minutes from whoa to go. Windows even found updates for the trackpad software, the wifi chip and the 945 onboard graphics all without any prompting. Do it Nige, just not on your main PC, just in case.

  • The trouble is, it's my main laptop with Vista that's driving me nutz. It's a crock with this rubbish Vista on it, but I'm too scared to upgrade it in case Microsoft trashes the whole thing completely with some loony Windows 7 bug or failure. What a damning indictment of how low MS has fallen eh?
