The Red Ferret Product of the Year 2009: Web – TV Trigger

Tvtrigger

Oh the competition was fierce in this sector this year, which just goes to show how sophisticated the new crop of Web applications and services are becoming as new technologies take hold. Our choice of TV Trigger as the winner was prompted however by the fact that it combines three of the most important and volatile components of the new web revolution in one awesomely simple to use package – television, BitTorrent and online shopping.

TV Trigger lets anyone set up a personal customised television catalogue to track and view their favourite programs as and when they want. What makes the service so outstandingly valuable is the total integration of the program data, cast, episodes, network etc, with an instantly accessible BitTorrent client. Missed a show you think you’d like? Just click on the episode you want, select the best torrent and it will start downloading immediately. A fabulous way to pick up on series, find stuff worth watching, and also of course play catch up via the monitoring service. It’s a superb and unbeatable combination.

The shortlist for great web applications this year was vast. YouTube products like YouTube Edu and the superb TubeRadio.fm showed off the power of video on the web, while we were blown away by the fabulous and instantly accessible functionality of Posterous, the email micro-blogging service which is really defining a whole new genre of online communication. The awesome Google Building Maker service based on Sketchup promises to revolutionise global mapping when it really takes off, and for sheer entertainment value the creativity of the innovative Kultiman ThruYou musical mashup will be hard to beat for a looong time.

Finally how could we leave without giving an honourable and admiring mention to the awesome Web 2.0 Suicide Machine, for offering what so many have secretly longed for, an elegant and simple way out of the trap of incessant social networking. We salute you folks.

We provide you with a very efficient and practical torrent search engine and downloader designed only for TV shows. The search engine gives you the ability to search easily for a show by season, episode, or just by name. Adding a show to your favorites saves locally all the show’s information for easier and faster access, and enables the monitoring feature. Monitoring a show links between TVTrigger as the TV shows resource, and TVTrigger as a Bittorrent client. Monitoring automatically searches for the newest episode(s) for your favorite show, and immediately add it to your downloads list. Also you can find much more settings for every favorite show that could make your life much easier.

  • Two big issues:
    1. It's sluggish on my (admittedly older) PC.
    2. There doesn't seem to be a way to add shows that aren't in its database.

    • 1. Well yes. :)

      2. Good point. Needs some community flavour also to help with rating programs and putting everything in context.
