USB Go-Link Hands on – super fast file transfer from computer to computer

Golinkbase

Dan recently featured this USB Go-Link PC to PC file transfer cable on the Ferret, so I thought I’d try it out and see if it worked as advertised. I’ve always had a soft spot for simple tech that makes it easy to move files around, compounded by the fact that modern networked solutions are generally pants.

For instance I’ve been trying to set up and use a supposedly hot-shot 1 TB wireless NAS drive for around 3 months now, with absolutely no success. It’s a pig to connect, drops the connection every few hours, and when connected it’s slow as pig swill.

Which makes this little USB gizmo a treat to use. Yeah I know it’s a different thing altogether, but for simple file transfer (which is all I want most of the time) it’s ideal. The Go-Link product comes in a pretty standard box with zero frills. Don’t expect a manual, there isn’t one. Just the device and a tiny CD containing the link software.

Once unpacked all you have to do is plug the USB cable into the slot on one PC, install the software from the CD and do the same with the other computer. That’s it. Once it’s all installed, just fire up the software on both machines and you’re good to go.

You get a choice of functions, a straight file transfer bridge, (which you use via simple drag and drop), a remote share, so you can share the DVD drive or Net connection from one PC to another (useful for no-DVD netbook software installations?), and Outlook and folder sync to keep 2 computers in sync with each other.

It’s fast! Once you’ve got the machines connected, and you’ve selected the file/s you want to transfer, just drag them into your choice of Windows explorer folder on the target machine and sit back. The thing moves the files over at a deliciously speedy 1 GB a minute, which means you can get a lot done. Not only that, but the software recognizes external USB drives on the target machine, so you can move files from remote drive to remote drive with absolutely zero hassle. Joy!

Oh nearly forgot, the memory card slots also mean you can move files from your microSD cards to and from external drives or computers as quick as a flash (arf!). With microSD capacities reaching silly levels nowadays, this on its own is a huge win. So, overall I’ve got to give this product 8/10 for doing the job. It would be 10/10 if they had made the cable retractable so you could pop it into your pocket for easy portability. But that’s a teeny quibble, eh? $26.00.
