The Sad Steve music site is a super minimalist ‘music distribution’ site which combines a conventional MP3 track search engine (aka clown suit) with a new artist roster and…gasp…payments to the bands. The idea is laudable. Take new artists, bundle them with music search, ask visitors to donate to struggling artists, hand over all the cash to said artists. Everyone wins.
I particularly like the Sad Steve Percolator, which is a bunch of 20 tracks playlisted for instant streaming and refreshed every 20 minutes or something. Quirky and fun, although the owner could clearly do with some more donations.
How does this site make money? Currently, it doesn’t. Sorry, Dad. The new artist profiles and pledge payment system make money for bands. I’m betting that if bands make money on my site, they’ll point their users to Sad Steve. And if users like the site, the site grows. If/when Sad Steve gets huge, I’ll consider putting ads up.
