Video wars.

Mmm, a longish Register thought piece on the competition between video on demand and DVD delivery services like Netflix. Er…folks…there is no competition. Once VOD comes of age, as it surely will once the pipes into the home get fat enough (read 2Mbps and up), then DVD rental in all forms is toast.

To date I’ve tested out the Homechoice VOD, Screenselect DVD by mail and the Sky+ PVR services. Homechoice is great but with a pitifully small choice of content, Screenselect has a great choice, but realistically you can only watch a max of two videos a week due to postal delays – a factor which I suspect is used by the company to keep turnaround of movies under control – and Sky+ with the PVR is great, apart from the fact that the movie choice is small compared to DVD rental. The key thing with Sky though, is that the choice of content overall is so massive and diverse that you can always find something interesting to record/watch using the PVR. It’s a no-brainer.
