Owning an aquarium can be nice, as there’s something soothing about watching a few fish swim around for a while. Unfortunately, one of the dangers of such things is the possibility of the tank overflowing. There are solutions out there, but one person decided to engineer an overflow sensor that would immediately cut power to the pump, should the water level rise too high.

If you know a little bit about electronics, you should be able to handle this project, since there are plenty of detailed instructions. The setup uses an IR sensor to watch the water level. Once the sensor is tripped, the pump will stop until someone comes along and presses the reset button. For about $45 and a good bit of work, you can have the peace of mind that comes with knowing you’ll never come home to a floor covered in water.
