Hack your vacuum to suck up water

Have you ever needed to suck up some water, but not really known what to use? Sure, you could use a Shop-Vac, but if you don’t have one already, this means going out to the store and making a potentially costly purchase. Why not instead just hack your regular vacuum to do the job?

You might be surprised to find that you can accomplish this feat using things you already have around the house. The only things you’re going to need are a soft drink bottle, 4 straws, tissue paper and a rubber band or two. Essentially you’re just going to cut a hole in the bottle, insert one end of the straws in the hole. Line the bottle opening with the tissue paper, and use a rubber band to keep it in place. Now attach your vacuum hose and use the other ends of the straws to suck up the water. What will happen is the straws will have enough suction to pull up the water, but once it hits the larger bottle, the suction won’t be enough to pull it up into the hose. I wouldn’t suggest using this for heavy-duty jobs, but it will work in a pinch.
