TouchFire adds a tactile keyboard to your iPad

When the iPhone was first announced, I laughed at the idea of using a keyboard with no tactile feedback whatsoever. These days I’ve gotten used to it, and can type rather proficiently on the glass screen. I still have a bit of trouble on my iPad, as it’s almost the size of a regular keyboard, but is off just enough to give me issues. Well thanks to this Kickstarter fund, we’ll soon have a keyboard for our iPads that won’t obstruct the screen.

This screen overlay gives you a set of raised keys where each of the on-screen keys is located. This gives you the feeling of a regular keyboard, and even allows you to rest your fingers on the keys, without triggering the screen. The overlay is completely transparent, which allows you to see everything that’s gone on. You can even swipe across keys, just like you would on the screen. The best part is that it uses the built-in magnets in the iPad 2 to automatically align itself, so you don’t have to worry about getting it in the right place. All you need to do is pledge $45, and you’ll get one delivered to your doorstep when they start production. Don’t worry about the Kickstarter project getting enough funding, as they’ve already had more than three times the necessary amount pledged.

  • I find it really baffling that everyone loves the iPad also wants a better keyboard.

If the iPad was a laptop, it would COME with a keyboard AND a free 'kickstand'.

I am waiting for the next generation of ultralight laptops that include touch screens. Instead of wishing my tablet had a keyboard and stand, I wish my laptop had a touch-screen.
