BioLite CampStove can cook with twigs and charge your gadgets

When you go camping, one of the ideas is to disconnect from our world of technology. However, if you’re faced with an emergency, or someone else desperately needs to get in contact with you, it’s good to have your phone on hand. Of course, if you’re out in the wild for days, there’s a good chance that your phone won’t last. That’s why you need an alternative way to keep it charged. Solar power is an obvious choice, but why not use fire?

The BioLite CampStove is a small device which burns rather efficiently using only small twigs. It maximizes efficiency by using a small bit of electricity to power a fan, which makes the fire burn better. While this is great for boiling water and cooking meals, the best part is that there is plenty of electricity left over to power your USB gadgets. The $129 price might seem expensive, but profits from these go toward a good cause. BioLite has been working to get their larger HomeStoves into homes that rely on open fires for cooking and heating. With 90% less smoke emissions, the people using them can lead healthier lives, and have the ability to charge electronics, when they might not have been able to, otherwise.mn

  • I wish they made a 12volt version for appliances (microwaves & mini-fridges). It would make a great back-up generator.
