Tread Desk makes you walk while you work

Let’s face it, we spend way too much time sitting in front of our computers. Living a sedentary lifestyle is definitely not good for us, but if it’s your job to be in front of a computer, then there’s not a whole lot you can do about it. Taking a break is always nice, but if you really get into your work, you’ll likely forget to get up and move about until you’ve finished the workday.

The Tread Desk is hoping to change all that by having you walk along while working. It is a nice idea to multitask like this, but I don’t know how it would translate in practice. First of all, you will need a desk that fits your height specifications. You will also need another desk (or one with adjustable height) and a chair so you can sit every now and then. If your office is big enough to accommodate all of this extra stuff, then this would be a great addition! However, if you have a smaller office, this thing is not really meant to be stored, and is pretty expensive, starting out around $840.

  • I've been using a treaddesk for a couple of years now so I feel fairly qualified to comment.

First, you can buy adjustable height desks that allows you to tweak the height. Alternatively you can mount some shelving on the wall using adjustable tracks and work with it to get things just right (including mounting your monitor(s) to the wall instead of standing them on the desk.) The latter has worked just fine for me.

Second, you may or may not need a second desk. I don't – on the very, very rare occaisions when I sit at my desk I just use a stool placed on the treadmill. Mostly, though, I walk or stand when I'm working. If you desparately want to sit some of the adjustable desks are designed to allow you to both sit and stand at the same desk.

You can do all of this in a surprisingly small office. My office is roughy 7' square and I've got plenty of room for the treadmill, computers, bookshelves and a printer.

Now for the real reason that I love my treaddesk – I think better on my feet and better still when moving. That's not to say that it's right for everyone but for people who tend to be inspired while running/walking/riding it's likely to boost their productivity while improving their health.
