10 superb Android apps that will make your smartphone photos sizzle [Freeware]

6. Awesome Miniature

Tilt-Shift photos are quite trendy in certain circles, and this program aims to make it super easy to turn your smartphone into a powerful tilt-shift studio. Much of the success of this kind of editing comes from the composition of the photo you start with (higher viewpoint is better), plus the cropping and other elements which delivers the overall effect. For this reason you’ll probably need to read up on some hints and tips before you start in order to get a satisfying result. That said, if you follow the rules you’ll be happy with this program.

7. Lapse It

Lapseit

The fact that you can actually contemplate doing sophisticated time-lapse photography on a mobile phone speaks volumes as to just how powerful these micro computers have become. The processing power needed tocapture and manipulate large numbers of images is just huge, so this free app is more than a little impressive. The free version naturally comes with some limitations, but is a great way to dip your toe into this fascinating area of photography, and pretty soon you’ll be capturing cool sunsets, flowers growing and other scenes that make time lapse the favorite of broadcasters like the BBC and other professionals. Oh and invest in a tripod!

8. UCam Ultra Camera

On the face of it, UCam is just another photo editor for phones, but dig a little deeper and you realise that it’s actually an excellent all-round toolbox for a huge selection of tasks involving your camera. Take the multitude of shooting modes. Not only standard camera and video modes, but also PIP (picture in picture), burst mode, panorama, collage and a very neat spy cam mode where your phone can be used for other tasks with the camera running permanently in the background taking snaps as you press the shutter. Very cool. Anyway, there’s a ton more integrated in the app, so you’ll just have to download it and play around to appreciate the value.

9. ActionSnap

Actionsnap

Sometimes all you need is a simple app which does one thing well, and that’s where this little puppy comes into play. ActionSnap is designed to take multiple images very quickly, which is perfect for capturing fast moving action or scenes where you’re not sure what’s going to happen next. The program also sports a bunch of effects like Sepia and Lomo, but for most people it will be the ease of pressing one button for multi-shot magic that will keep them using the app.

10. Pixlr-o-Matic

Pixlromatic

Yet another deceptive app which merely seems to offer more of the same kind of photo effects editing as all the others, but in reality this is a superb tool for getting exactly the kind of moody feelyou want from your photos. It features a huge selection of film stock types(withmore available for free download) as well as lighting effects and frames, all wrapped up in a fabulously easy drag and select interface. You can turn your boring snap into a work of art literally in seconds. There’s no real time processing (you have to take the shot first) but boy does it work well anyway.

BONUS

Paper Camera (NOT freeware)

Papercamera

This innovative app is a glorious effects processor which provides some top quality settings for your photos in real time. You can take photos in a comic book style or neon, dot matrix printer, vintage or a bunch more. What makes this program special is the quality of the settings, and the brilliant results you get. You don’t want to use this for every photo, but this is a superb tool for grabbing a fun shot for a poster, invitation or other project. This is not freeware, but I’m including it here because it is a fabulous product, and well worth the 1.19.
