Name My Tune – find the name of that song you can’t remember

namemytune

Ever been in the maddening situation of trying to remember a song which is on the tip of your tongue, but which you just can recall? Well there are a bunch of tools out there to help, like Shazam and suchlike, but these are based on computer pattern matching, which means they’re only as good as the patterns in the database. But fear not, there’s now another option.

Name My Tune uses the power of other people’s memory instead of a computer to help you remember a lost tune. Simply hum, whistle or sing the tune into your webcam or computer microphone, select the genre or year if you can remember them and enter your email address.

The service then stores your audio submission, and lets anyone attempt to guess what the song is, after which it will automatically email you the submitted suggestions. The one thing you learn quickly is that most people have problems humming a song, so what you get is mostly indecipherable. But we did manage to identify one tune from the system. It’s not going to change the world, but it’s fun.

  • Just an FYI: There is a sub-Reddit called TipOfMyTongue that serves much the same purpose, for just about anything you can barely remember.

    • Brilliant, thanks for the tip. :)
