Blue ID – your phone as a car key

BlueIDDrive

You may have thought that throwing all this technology at the humble mobile phone was getting ridiculous, but you’ve really not seen anything yet. Not only are these people expecting us to use them as wallets, citizen arrest cameras and to monitor earthquakes, but now they’re actually expecting that we’ll throw our car keys away and phone our way into the driving seat.

The BlueID technology uses Bluetooth SMART technology to verify the owner, open the doors and start a car remotely. No Internet connection is needed, the thing is completely self contained. The developers are claiming that not only will this usher in a whole new era of keyless driving, but it will also encourage the development of new car sharing services, where anyone with a phone can share or rent a vehicle with just a touch of a button.

The first demo of the technology has just been given at the giant CeBit expo in Germany this week, and we’re definitely intrigued. AirBnB for cars using your phone? Interesting idea. The only problem is we can see the hacker brigade going nutz on the whole technology, which means yet more hassles with keeping your phone safe and secure at all times.

  • Manual car keys are outdated… we just walk up to the car touch it and it opens, why on earth would I want to get out my phone, turn on bluetooth, launch an app and press a button. Try that while holding 2 shopping bags….

    • Ah..but what about if you wanted to lend your car to a friend without handing over your keys or keyless fob? You could just give them a code for their app and away they go? I see a lot of potential for the technology beyond just starting the car.

    • Yep, that does make sense…
