PEEK – the portable eye examination kit

There are 285 million people around the world who are visually impaired, of which nearly 40 million are blind. And the sad part is a vast proportion of these incidents of blindness could be avoided with the use of some basic eye care. Of course the real problem is that most of this happens in low-income countries, which makes it difficult for healthcare officials to facilitate the necessary eye examinations which are a step towards saving and restoring lost eyesight.

Now an innovative project called PEEK (‘portable eye examination kit’) which is based around the use of a smartphone and some clever diagnostic software, is trying to change this poor state of affairs. The PEEK Vision system uses a suite of smartphone apps to provide accurate testing for a range of eye ailments, including visual acuity, color vision testing, lens imaging for cataracts, retinal imaging and so on.

Early versions of the system are currently being tested in Kenya in Africa as well as other places, and the idea is that once it’s deployed properly it will provide a cost effective and simple way to help those suffering with eye ailments no matter how remote their location. We wish the team success.
