We’ve just about wrapped up the intelligent device implementation in most places you can think of. Our cars can now drive themselves, we have homes which can automatically maintain their environment through sophisticated automation, and even our personal devices deliver more serious smarts than we can handle. But one of the remaining areas where technology hasn’t made huge strides is the garden…until now.

The GreenIQ Garden Computer delivers some very clever digital automation to help you save money and make your outdoor environment more pleasant at the same time. The little WiFi connected box can interface with your sprinkler/irrigation system to ensure that you deliver exactly the right amount of water when needed, and not a drop more. It can also control your garden lighting to switch on and off at the right times.

The cool thing is it does all this by connecting with weather forecasts, and seasonal sunset and sunrise schedules throughout the year, so it’s a fire and forget system as long as you have a working Internet connection in your home. The whole thing can also be controlled remotely via your smartphone (but what’s new eh?), so if you suddenly get the urge to switch on your sprinkler while you’re in a meeting in Moscow, you can. Weird, but possible.

What we’d really like to see is an automated lawn mower option, which lets you switch on the grass cutter when you’re on vacation, but maybe that’s pushing the whole intelligence thing a bit too much. Anyway for now, we’re thinking it’s a good start and a product which could be a real boon in places like Southern California where water scarcity is becoming something of a real issue.
