Door security has hitherto typically been restricted to buzzers and videophones, which often involve complicated installations, but now there’s an alternative system which makes use of standard DECT wireless technology to combine the two functions.
The VTech DECT Video Doorbell is a 2 handset landline DECT phone system which works in the same way as conventional cordless phones do, except the handsets also connect to a camera doorbell unit, which can be battery or mains powered. The handsets are also conventional DECT phones, with an integrated walkie-talkie function.
The idea is when anyone comes to your door and pushes the doorbell, instead of just an audio alert, the box will also send an instant snapshot photo of the person standing there at the door. You can then decide whether to activate a video and audio feed, or not. They’re calling it Caller ID for your front porch, although we would have to ask how high resolution the camera is before making a final judgment.
The price of the complete 2 handset kit is $99.50.
