True Android geeks love their platform in ways that iOS users can only dream about. Unlike soft bellied iPhone users, ‘droids have a need, an almost primordial urge in fact, to tinker, tweak and optimize their device of choice. And now the perfect free tool has arrived to let them do just that.

Android Tuner Free is a belt and braces utility app, which contains around 20 to 30 different app functions designed to let you fiddle with your phone or tablet long into the night. What makes it especially interesting is the fact that this one utility can replace a whole bunch of commercial apps you may have thought about buying, and also deliver extra.

You can set up task schedules to do things like clean up the device and manage apps, although some of the more exotic things like auto clean up of caches and optimizing the device are only available in the Pro version or on rooted devices.

There’s also a pretty slick battery manager and monitor in there, and although we’re still ultra fans of Better Batter Stats, this makes a fairly solid free alternative. Using this sort of tool, by the way, can really make the difference to your battery life, since they help you locate battery hogging apps quickly so you can take action.

The user interface unfortunately is directly out of the Klingon Ghastly Manual, which really takes away from some of the utility of the software, but if you’re prepared to persevere and dig beneath the ugly black exterior there’s some real nuggets inside. Some of the tools, like the CPU manager, you use at your own peril, but things like the task manager and memory cleaner are really cool, and deliver a lot of power for getting the best out of your phone or tablet.

Ultimately though, this is the sort of tool you need installed because it gives you so much more information and control over your device, which could be all you need to keep it running in tip top fashion for as long as possible. We would give it top marks and a recommended if it weren’t for the 90s interface, but as it is, this is still going on our list of must-have utility apps.
