Word Lens – awesome translation app for iOS and Android is now free, and part of Google [Freeware]

Word just in says that Google has bought Word Lens, the ultra clever app for Apple and Android, which lets you point your camera at a foreign language sign and read an instant translation. We first covered it back in 2010, when it only offered a couple of languages, but it’s now grown to six, ranging from Russian to German, Italian and Portuguese.

The big news however, apart from the fact that we can expect to see the technology inside Google translation products very shortly, is the fact that the apps are now free for all, whereas before you had to pay for the language packs to go with the basic offering.

If you’ve ever been stuck trying to read a French menu – and let’s face it, who hasn’t eh? – then you’ll relish the ability to whip out your phone to get an instant translation (without the need for a data connection!) on your screen.

You can pick up the Apple iOS version from here and the Android version here. Ciao.
