Structure Sensor – turn your tablet into an amazing full blown 3D color scanner

structure4

The world is three dimensional, photographs are not. Which is a shame when you’re trying to capture anything that you’ll need three dimensional data for later. You can guesstimate,  but that’s not really a skill that most people have when it comes to things like room planning or figure modeling. Enter the Structure Sensor, a very cool 3D color scanner for your tablet computer.

This attachment clips on to your tablet computer (it is natively ready for the iPad, but it will also run with Android and other tablets) and turns it into a sophisticated color 3D scanner. It allows you to measure entire rooms with one pass. Which is super handy when you’re moving into a new spot and are trying to figure out if your couch will fit. It also allows you to scan objects so they can be replicated in other 3D programs. Think of the #selfies you could take.

These guys also want you to be able to make their product better, so they have included open source drivers and specs so that you can mess around and customize the product for your own needs. Think hackers, hobbyists, surveyors and artists, in fact anyone that needs to create full color 3D models quickly and easily. The Structure Sensor starts at $379.
