Apple restricts new iPhone 6 NFC to Apple Pay only [How Stupid Can One Company Be?]

Oh wow, apparently Apple has confirmed that it’s new iPhone 6 NFC implementation is locked to work with only one app, the Apple Pay service. Oh my oh my. This is rather like locking Bluetooth to work only with an iPod, and we can’t help feeling that Steve Jobs must be spinning at several thousand RPM right now, as this incredibly dumb move goes down.

To say that trying to divert an open standard to a single use is incredibly stupid is obvious, because the whole point of these technologies is to encourage development and interoperability. The mind boggles as to how a company which has in the past supported a ton of open standards can turn around and do something like this.

After all, it’s not as though NFC hasn’t already got a raft of cool apps and stuff working already. There are hundreds of NFC apps on Google Play, and despite what the Apple fanboys suggest – that NFC has stalled and needs Apple – there are a lot of manufacturers already making very good use of it on their products nowadays.

For example I routinely use NFC to connect to a Panasonic camcorder with a single tap, and also car mounts and wireless speakers and a host of other accessories, yeah NFC is alive and well and works really well thank you Cupertino. But hey, you go ahead and try and pretend that NFC is nowhere. We’ll be sitting here waiting until you catch up. Sheesh!

  • I think this was a very intelligent, and strategic, move by Apple – effectively stifling it’s competition in the field of mobile payments to ensure that they can monopolise this sector of the market.
