The lure of the open road attracts millions of people every year, to pack up your troubles and head out on the highway. It’s the stuff of romance and adventure. But it’s a fact that you need quite a bit of money if you’re going to do it the more comfortable way, by buying a camper van or RV. But now there’s a better option.

The SwissRoomBox is a small wheeled suitcase affair which can turn just about any car into a comfortable mobile home. Well when we say comfortable we mean you’ll be able to sleep in the car on a reasonable bed, and cook and eat at a proper table and stuff.

The whole thing is very ingenious – what do you expect from the Swiss? – and can be deployed in around 5 minutes from scratch. You don’t have to do any modification to the car at all, the whole thing comes with it’s own install kit which adjusts to the size of the vehicle when you set it up.

The bed can be adjusted so it’s level, no matter how or where you are parked, and the complete kit only weighs 29kg for the car model. There’s a larger van model at 41kg. The sellers even suggest you can carry it with you on-board the flight to your holiday destination and use it in a rental car, which could be very cool indeed if you’re stuck without a hotel or want to save some money.
