Suruk – keeping cab and rickshaw drivers honest, one meter at a time [Freeware]

suruk

This Indian based app has such a lot of cool stuff that we’d like to see offered in other countries that we just had to feature it. If you’ve ever traveled to the fair land of India, you’ll know how tricky it can be to travel around using a taxi or rickshaw. The problem is the opportunist drivers who think any tourist is ripe for exploitation and who will try their best to rip you off by taking the long route, fiddling the meter or even telling you that the market is closed ‘but my uncle has a great store you can use instead’.

This free Android app, Suruk, won’t help you in the last case – you just have to insist on going to your original destination or you won’t pay – but it sure will help with the other cases. And we wish there was an international version which could be used with dodgy drivers everywhere.

The app lets you check immediately what the real fare should be for your journey, and make sure that the distance traveled corresponds with the shortest route. There’s even a rating system, which lets you enter the license number and check other user’s views on that taxi or rickshaw.

There are some western countries where an app like that would be very useful indeed, and we’re not talking for tourists only either. As it is, this app is only valuable for those who live in or spend a fair amount of time traveling to India on business or vacation, but we love the idea. Come on developers, what are you waiting for? Let’s have an international version.
