Question: When is a USB cable not a USB cable? Answer: When it’s a WiFi router hotspot. You’ve got to love tech sometimes, especially when unpredictable things happen. Who would have thought that someone would come up with a standard microUSB charge and data sync cable which would also do something quite so cool?

This WiFi HotSpot USB Cable not only charges your phone and tablet computer, and lets you transfer data from computer to phone and vice versa, but it also has one other cool secret.Plug it into a computer, and it will turn on a WiFi hotspot so all your other devices can share the signal. How cool is that?

It’s definitely the smallest WiFi router we’ve ever seen, which makes it rather neat for travelers to pop into their bag to use on their hotel travels. The cable is one meter long and max speed of the thing is 54 Mbps. Priced at $19.95.

  • The linked page wasn’t altogether clear on how this was accomplished but found the same product on Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/E-More%C2%AE-Hotspot-Moblie-Routing-Adapter/dp/B00O7LAZZS). Seems to me that the main computer must be hard-wired connected (ethernet). The 2-1 cable then turns the ethernet connected device into a wireless hotspot. As an fyi, there are a number of software solutions to this.

When first reading this, I thought that a wirelessly connected device could use that very same connection to become a hotspot. I don’t think we have a solution for that (not sure though).

    • Nice feedback, thanks John.
