Solar Impulse 2 – follow the amazing world record fuel free flight in real time from inside the cockpit

solarimpulse2

In case you haven’t yet heard, two intrepid Swiss adventurers have just set off on a round the world flight in a solar powered plane which will use absolutely no extra fuel on the journey. The 17,000 solar panels will charge up some on-board lithium ion batteries to keep the plane aloft during the night, and they will simply keep going until they complete the whole journey around the globe.

The great thing is we can all follow the amazing Solar Impulse 2 craft from an online dashboard, as it makes the journey. The dashboard, which runs in your web browser, shows a location on the map, along with telemetry such as height, speed, heading etc. It’s just like being in the cockpit with the pilot.

The plane is currently heading south from the gulf at a speed of around 30 mph (it’s going to take a long time to get round the world!) and a height of just over 5000 feet. We are also given unprecedented access to the stats of everything from the state of the batteries, to the health of the pilot at any time.

It’s a must view, so get going and support this really worthy cause. Amazing.
