Power to the pooch.

Dogpowerscooter

The Dog Powered Scooter. Well actually a harness and outrigger that you can attach to any ‘approved’ 2 wheeled vehicle. $240.00 plus shipping. Twin dog accessory an extra $180.00. The cat powered version is on hold while Tiddles takes a nap! Super clever stuff.

Simply harness the dog and clip them into the frame and off you go. With just a few outings pulling the scooter the dog quickly learns when to slow (by feeling the braking) and which direction to turn by again “feeling” the side pull on the harness. Dogs love it because it takes little “effort” to pull the scooter and they get excercise next to their owner. The owners love it because they are excercising their pets with little effort on their part and getting a fun free ride! (yet will participate by kicking up hills) The harness connection insures that no downward loads are applied to the dog or scooter.

  • A dog is not your personal slave. If you want to ride a bike, pedal your own fat ass around town.

Given that this is an invention from a single inventor (who I doubt has consulted much with vets or other experts to determine how safe this is for dogs), I would suggest great caution before strapping a dog you love into this contraption.

It’s great that the dog will quickly learn how to pull the scooter, but what if you have to break suddenly? What happens if the scooter flips? You fall off, but the dog is strapped in, and assuming a 180 degree flip will get to fall to earth, with it’s back taking the impact of the harness bar.

I hope anyone willing to strap their dog into this will be equally willing to shell out for the (often expensive) veterinary care and perhaps less funny dog wheelchair cart that might be required after having an accident with this thing.

  • Actually looking at the video, I don’t see any stress on the dogs at all, lots of tails wagging and pooches look around at the scenery as they trot along. Very unlike a stressed out team of sled dogs.

Maybe you’re right about the accident potential, but it really looks as though the dogs enjoy it. You wouldn’t want to strap a Pekinese to a 300 lb adult of course, but sensible owners wouldn’t do that, would they?
