Comma.ai – turn your normal car into a self-driving one (almost)

comma-one

People who like to road trip but hate driving may finally see some relief soon. The AI startup Comma.ai has announced their self-driving car system and, good news, you won’t even have to buy a whole new car to use it.

A couple of things to note here, this kit won’t turn your ride into Will Smith’s chariot from I Robot but it will give you an autopilot option that keeps you from (ideally) having to touch the wheel, gas, or brakes. It keys into your car’s existing hardware and uses it to keep the vehicle safely on the road.

Which brings us to the second thing of note, this is only available for certain cars. Obviously, if you have a 20-year-old beater with none of today’s bells and whistles, this product will do nothing for you but kudos to you for keeping that thing running! Comma.ai will be shipping before the end of the year for $999 with a $24 monthly subscription fee. If you want in on this, keep abreast of the website as more details will be coming soon.
