Mercedes solves Trolley Problem – just pick the driver

the-mercedes-benz-f-015

If you’ve been paying attention to the world of technology, self-driving cars are totally a thing that is going to happen but there’s been one problem. How do we program them to make the “right” choice in a crash? When it comes to who dies and lives in a Mercedes, they’ve picked the driver.

The Trolley Problem is one that has been plaguing the developers of self-driving vehicles for some time. In situations where lives are at stake, how does the car pick which way to go? To bypass this, Mercedes self-driving vehicles will be set to choose the outcome that ensures the lives of the people inside the car. If that means plowing down someone’s grandma, so be it.

This idea seems incredibly cold but it is factored against the many lives that would no longer be lost due to careless human error and is one solution to this issue. Not the best, for sure, but a solution. As we get closer to self-driving cars in the mainstream, let’s hope we come up with something better for the classic Trolley scenario. Check out the Mercedes Benz F015 on their website.
