Disc Rot – are you CDs dying right under you nose?

In love with your CD collection still? You may think baring some catastrophic event you two will never be parted but you’re wrong. CDs and DVDs may seem like they would last forever but that’s not the case, your precious disk may be slowly rotting away right now.

Despite good care, our optical media can still be hit by “disc rot” which is actually a slew of problems caused mainly by manufacturing techniques used throughout the years. As they were discovered, they were corrected but for the media that had already been purchased, well, sorry about your luck.

Disc rot shows up as small spots or discolored areas on the disc itself. These areas actually corrupt the data making it unplayable in parts and can affect even discs that are factory sealed which is a real bummer. There’s nothing you can do stop it so if you’ve got some rare music, movies, or games it’s best to get them to digital world so you can still enjoy them, even if the disc fails.
