Lilium Jet – takes off like a helicopter, flies like a plane

Flight is awesome but planes need a lot of space to get off the ground, that’s what makes helicopters so handy for areas where there isn’t a landing strip. What if you could combine the gracefulness of planes with the compact usefulness of a helicopter? That is the Lilium Jet, the plane with vertical takeoff and landing.

Traditionally planes need a full airstrip for take off and landings while helicopters don’t because they can take off and land vertically. This makes the later great for urban or other situations where there’s no space for a runway. The Lilium Jet takes off like a helicopter but once in the air, moves just like a plane. It accomplishes this by having jets that switch direction (gently) after take off and before landing.

This small prototype only seats two people and it looks very much like some futuristic space pod (which honestly adds to the appeal). Right now it’s still in the testing phase but it has made it’s virgin flight safely and is under further development. Check out the video to see it in action.
