Plastic From Sugar – new process may turn sugar based plastic into a reality

Plastic waste may not last as long as we originally thought it would but it still lingers in landfills and water supplies far longer than what is healthy for our little blue planet, well if we want to keep it blue that is. A new plastic made from sugar may help us have a cleaner tomorrow.

Most of the items we use and love in our everyday life is made from polycarbonate plastic and contains BPA which is a very toxic chemical. So toxic in fact that we no longer use it in baby bottles. This alternative uses sugar to create a plastic that is durable and biodegradable. This alternative plastic is also bio-compatible so it may be used for medical implants and the like.

Holding back its adaption has been the use of a toxic chemical in its production but a new method is much safer and is actually even more sustainable than traditional plastic production. It’s not ready for market yet but once perfected, the future of plastic might be a lot sweeter.
