You could try and read http://oupower.com/ This guy is experimenting with the stuff. Rather well documented too. Even if the amount of energy put in the splitting of water equals (more or less) the amount of combustionpower of the hydrogen, it’s still a neat system. Imagine creating electricity with solar or windpower, transporting that to your home (or hydrogen-station) and taking this clean electricity to fill your tank… Rather environmental friendly I’d say.
