Image Descriptions – a quick how-to for a more accessible internet

If you’ve been around the internet for a bit, you may have noticed that some websites and comment boards are including image descriptions to their texts. The process of writing them isn’t hard and makes the internet a more accessible place. This informative post gives a brief rundown on how to write your own.

Image descriptions are great for accessibility reasons. It allows screen readers to convey information to blind and vision impaired users. It also is great for people who have slow or otherwise substandard internet connections where large pictures may not load. By adding the description, they will still be able to gather any important information that may be in the image.

As the article points out, thee descriptions do not have to be very dramatic or lengthy. Much of the time they are simple. Like this one for the image above, *A small chalkboard with a light, wooden table behind and a stem of small, white flowers on the upper left corner, a coffee mug with some green liquid on the bottom left corner, and a few green leaves on the bottom right corner. The board reads, “cool.”*
