AlgoTransparency – do you know what YouTube is going to show you next?

Whenever you do anything on the internet, you have to agree to the Terms of Algorithms are the mystery that runs social media. Over the last few years there’s been a lot of talk about them in regards to what they’re serving up to people and how they affect our world view. Although most of this has been focused on Facebook and Google, YouTube also it’s fair share of problems. AlgoTransparency is the company that is trying to let people know how the video giant decides what video is going to autoplay next.

The aim of the project is to let people know what’s going on behind the scenes. It figures this out by testing what vides show up in YouTube search results from an account that has no history. You can check out the code they used to make the program that does the test, it’s open source, have fun.

This is an interesting look in how the world is channeled for us. YouTube shows popular videos which may or may not be factual so every search result is a mix of facts, opinions, and conspiracies. The company is working on tools for other sites as well. Check them out on the website.
