Sunscreen Dangers – common beach product is helping to kill the ocean

Plastic is a huge problem for our oceans. The waste ends up in the and wreaks havoc on the ecosystem. But that’s not the only thing that is out there making the seas not so nice. Chemicals also play a role in destroying these natural wonders. And not dumping them, chemicals in your sunscreen. So Hawaii is banning them.

The tiny state is known for it’s beaches (it’s an Island after all) and many people from around the world vacation there. Unfortunately, some of the sunscreen that we slather on to shield ourselves from things like cancer have harmful chemicals that wash off when we go to take a deep.

Oxybenzone and octinoxate, where are common in most sunscreens are toxic to coral reefs. With the huge amounts of beach tourism that comes through the islands, you can imagine the problem. Not to worry though, there are other brands that work just as well and are not hazardous to the ocean. Just something to keep in mind as we head into the warm season to be more earth friendly.
