Peat bogs Closing in Ireland – first step to counteracting harmful greenhouse gasses

Peat bogs are contributing to climate change. This fuel source that has been important to Ireland for nearly a century is harmful to the planet, more so than even coal. The good news is that the company that harvests these bogs announced plans to shut them down, the bad news is that it might not be enough to curtail the damage.

Even after bogs are no longer active, they still release gases into the air. Simply not digging them up anymore doesn’t reverse the damage. Although it is a great idea to move away from them as an energy source and towards more sustainable alternatives, just shutting them down is only half of the battle.

The bogs need to be rehabilitated, not just left. That extra step could make them safe, as far as greenhouse gases go. Rehabilitation is a process but well worth it to really begin to push back against climate change. Check out the article for more information on the future plans for the bogs.
