New eco-friendly wireworm killing fungus could reduce the need for pesticides

Have you ever heard of the wireworm? Well, farmers from around the world have to deal with this pest on a regular basis, especially potato farmers. Typically farmers would spray pesticides to get rid of these worms, but as we know, such things are not good for the environment.

To help fight the wireworm pest, the EU chose to fund an eco-friendly project known as INBIOSOIL. It was designed from the ground up to control wireworms in potatoes, but not only that, it can also be used to help organic and conventional systems.

Here’s the thing, this new form of pest control contains an entomopathogenic fungus designed to attack specific insects. This means it could reduce the use of chemicals on farms worldwide, which in turn helps to protect the environment from harm.

As it stands right now, the European Union member countries are the only ones with access to this wireworm killing fungus. We expect that in the years to come, it could spread to other nations, and that, friends, would definitely be a win for the planet.
