We’re Recycling Wrong – here are some tips for being better

Recycling is having some problems in the west. What most people don’t realize is that we ship most of our waste to other countries to be processed but unfortunately for us, those countries aren’t taking our trash anymore and we aren’t very good at making sure that our garbage is sorted properly which keeps it from getting recycled. We’ve gotta do better and this article gives some tips how.

First and foremost, no plastic bags in the recycle bin. Seriously. They’re clogging up the gears. Just store them for reuse, take them back to the store, do one of the many DIY projects that exists to upcycle plastic bags (like the video at the end of this article). Also not to be tossed, paper lined with plastic or greasy cardboard. That second one you can compost.

Plastic bottles can be recycled with lids, don’t crash cans, and take metal scrap to the scrap yard. In order to get the most out of recycling, we have to be bit more proactive than just tossing things in the blue bins and hoping for the best.
