Heavier Taxes for Emissions – economists agree that more needs to be done to corporations

Economists have a new view on climate change: We need to be charging bad actors more, now, to push them into making changes for our planet. New theories on the matter indicate that we should taxing companies who are causing emissions $100 or more per ton to push them to stop.

There are companies that already impose fines for emissions however, these fines are quite low comparatively and economists believe they are not nearly high enough. The prevailing wisdom of the past was that we should start low and increase overtime but that has changed. Now it is believed to be better to start high so that companies will be pushed to change faster.

The idea of taxing companies directly has been under discussion for quite some time but hasn’t caught on around the world. As climate change ramps up, it might be time to revisit this.
