Biosolids – composting toilets may provide a new brand of fertilizer

We’ve talked about composting toilets before and they’re really catching on! In fact, human waste is being rebranded as “biosolids” and could help us revive our depleted soils and close the waste circle even for more urban environments.

Right now composting toilets are something that are mainly seen in more rural environments or in places like festivals and golf courses where you just don’t have a direct line to the sewage system. The resulting waste can then be put right back into the environment as water or fertilizer with some treatment.

Although not greatly in use, some supporters are hoping that the concept catches on in more populated areas so that their waste can be harvested as well. It can be used a fertilizer or even put into systems to power the very buildings that they are being produced at. The future is waste.
