Almond milk is super popular but harvesting the main ingredient requires a lot more than just planting a tree and watching them flourish. It takes the work of a lot of bees and that work is killing them through a variety of ways.
California grows a massive amount of the world’s almonds and in order to do this, bees are brought in to pollinate the trees. This helps the beekeepers earn money during the off season which would be a great thing if the process didn’t prove so deadly for the insects. Mites, pesticides and disease all account for record losses of the animals.
There’s not really an easy answer beekeepers must keep up their livelihood and the orchards have become part of that. On the other hand, the orchards are also not the most environmentally sound things either as they use a massive amount of water on top of the bee issues. Hopefully a solution is found before it’s too late.
