Trees are important to fighting the climate crisis but how will they do in a world with less water? Well it turns out they’re already making some changes to survive drier times. As the climate changes, trees are changing with it.
Scientists have been tracking tree communities for a number of years and have found that less hardy trees, trees that need more water, were dying, which is sad, but they are leaving behind the trees that can survive with less which means the tree community is stronger overall.
This is a process that is happening naturally, without human intervention. The downside is that it might not be in step with how fast things are changing and therefore won’t help. There’s no way to know which way things will go right now but it is hopeful to see that trees are making these community changes.
