eDumper – and you thought EVs were limited to cars and golf carts?

So you remember when we all used to laugh at electric cars? Call them glorified golf carts? Yeah well about that. Tesla clearly broke the ice with the original Sportster, but now the whole battery powered thing is moving in an entirely new direction. Heavy industrial machinery. Take for instance, this Swiss made eDumper.  The fully electric dump truck ain’t no Tonka Toy (look it up).  The beast is expected to move 300,000 tons of rock every year for the next 10 years and will save up to 1300 tons of CO2e and 500,000 litres of diesel. That’s big numbers.

The truck beat the record for the world’s largest battery at 4.5 tons. It can transport an eye watering 65 tons of rock per trip and because it has some clever regenerative braking on board, it will be able to maximize battery use too. It’s already in operation in Switzerland, although we’re not told exactly how much it cost to convert this standard truck into an electric version. We’re trying to get our head around a monster truck creeping around with a tiny electric motor whine. It’s not working.
